The Golden Joystick Awards 2007It's a quarter of a century old, it's very popular with developers and publishers and it has one of the dodgiest titles for an event: The Golden Joystick Awards. the ceremony has industry bods getting together for a big round of back slapping and partying... oh and a few awards too. We tagged along to last Friday's ball at the Hilton in London, to get all of the juicy stories, drink all of the free booze and try to get the winners to say something original. That we managed only one of those goals was a bit disappointing but read on anyway! Award ceremonies are a bit of an odd thing, to be honest. Not that there's anything wrong with awarding good work or success, but they're often rather artificial. So it's a nice change to have one that has people just having a laugh, and getting through the "serious" part as quickly as possible, in order to hit the partying and booze pronto. The Golden Joystick Awards kicked off 25 years ago, when video gaming was nothing more than a bunch of dots boinging around the screen - how things have changed! Another difference with the GTAs compared to the usual ceremonies is that they take place during an afternoon, with a distinct lack of "red carpet." The latter is because video game developers aren't exactly rock stars and the former means one gets a longer post-awards party! But what of the event itself? Sadly, we saw virtually nothing of it because independent journalists were kept out of the way and once things started rolling, the gongs were handed out so quick that it was virtually impossible to keep track of all the winners, losers and famous people attending. British comedian Dave Mitchell hosted the fun, and started things off with a very funny comparison of how everything, bar video games, has become pretty crap over the last 25 years - in his words: "then you watched white dots on a black screen, but now you're in a f***ing movie!" We're not drinking blue stuff, eating food pills or driving around in hovercars, but we do have the best home entertainment ever! Anyway, here's the list of award categories and the 2007 winners:
So just in the same way that Nintendo and Wii Sports cleared up at this year's BAFTA gaming awards, Microsoft, Epic and Gears of War took the honours here. There was some definite raised eyebrows over some of the selections, but no matter: the winners were happy, the losers were busy getting drunk and we had interviews to try and hold. By some miracle we managed to grab Ubisoft and Codemasters...
