Battlefield Heroes is an EA/DICE shooter that appears to be more than slightly inspired by Valve's Team Fortress 2. Beyond that, all we know that it's coming soon. Oh, and the first trailer with actual gameplay is out now.

Cartoon-style action, complete with guys sitting on airplane wings, shooting people on the ground. Silly, but sure looks like fun.

I'm personally "sold" on the idea, and while it's obvious that Valve provided some inspiration, it's also has it's own distinct style. Let's just hope that DICE can deliver as the previous Battlefield titles have been technically less than perfect, and their patching speed has disappointed people over and over again. I'm also bit skeptical of their "play for free" microtransaction-based business model, but I'll restrain my urge to blast EA to teeny bits for this experiment until the fine details of their offering are available.

Battlefield Heroes is scheduled for "later this year", and as the trailer explains in great detail, "You don't visit a store, you don't enter your credit card details and you don't download it on Bittorrent - it's free".

Let's just hope that doesn't mean it will actually be completely swarmed by those "swearing, ultra-skilled 15 year old boys who play the game every day for 8 hours" that EA promises you won't end up facing. Previous free play games have generally attracted the younger crowd, that constantly scours the Internet for anything new to play - anything that doesn't ask for those credit card details...
